Stylized interiors with figurative and natural elements
My series Passages contrasts stylized interiors - either grand architecture or run-down spaces - with figurative and natural elements. There are a few different layers of concepts I’m exploring here. How humans create these extravagant physical structures that ultimately get reclaimed by nature… also psychologically how we build extravagant structures around ourselves to protect ourselves, to express ourselves, to become ourselves, but ultimately they can become traps, and we need help to free ourselves from them. Help from other people, help from nature. I started these before covid was a thing, and shortly thereafter, we were all confined to interior spaces too! So an intriguing bit of foreshadowing there. I also have been experimenting with viewing these as colonial spaces for critiquing other aspects of history and current events.
